Coral has been set into Oaxacan filigrana for centuries — and the pairing still stops people mid-sentence.

These Oaxacan filigree coral earrings are built the way all true filigrana oaxaqueña is built: one hair-thin silver wire at a time, twisted and soldered by hand into an intricate lace-like cage that holds the coral as if it grew there. The technique has lived in Oaxaca for nearly five centuries, passed from silversmith to silversmith, never written down. At 6.5 cm long and 5 cm wide, these are statement earrings — bold enough to carry a room, refined enough that the room cannot quite explain why.

About Oaxacan filigree

Filigrana oaxaqueña arrived in Oaxaca via Spanish silversmiths in the 1500s and was absorbed into local craft tradition so completely that it became one of the city's defining art forms. Today, only a small number of family workshops in Oaxaca's historic jewelry quarter still practice it at this level. Each piece is constructed one wire at a time — painstaking, irreplaceable, and unmistakable.

Styling

The warm red-orange of coral against silver filigree is one of those combinations that looks intentional with almost any color — particularly with dark tones and earth tones. Wear these with a terracotta dress, a black linen shirt, or a cream blouse for an effect that is unmistakably Oaxacan and unmistakably refined.

Care

Polish with a soft silver cloth. Store in an airtight pouch or anti-tarnish bag. Coral is sensitive to chemicals — keep away from perfume, hairspray, and cleaning products. Remove before swimming.
