She works in feathers. Real ones, woven into silk fringe by hand. That is how you know it is hers.

This rebozo is not something you find at a tourist market. It comes from a Purepecha master weaver in Michoacán known for her remarkable color combinations — color pairings so deliberate they read as compositional choices, not accidents of dye. At each end, she knots the silk fringe into the elaborate tassels the Purepecha call rapacejo, then works real feathers into the weave as her personal signature. Every piece is woven on a telar de cintura — the backstrap loom — and takes approximately one month to complete.

The story

The Purepecha (P'urhépecha) of Michoacán have kept backstrap-loom weaving alive for longer than written records can confirm. The telar de cintura is tied around the weaver's waist — the tension of her own body shapes every thread, every stripe, every inch. This rebozo Alhuiran style has been produced in the community for generations, passing from weaver to weaver without a written pattern to guide it.

Frequently asked questions

What makes this rebozo different from a standard shawl?
The rapacejo fringe is hand-knotted, the feathers are woven in by hand, and the entire textile is produced on a backstrap loom where the weaver's own body tension controls the thread. No machine replicates this.

How long does a Purepecha rebozo take to weave?
Approximately one month of sustained weaving on a backstrap loom — not counting the additional time for knotting the fringe flowers and placing the feathers.

Does this ship quickly?
Ships in approximately one week from order. These are made in limited quantities.
