The stripes are not decoration — they are the language the weaver speaks.
Every Purepecha artisan from Michoacán who works on a telar de cintura develops her own color vocabulary over decades. The multi-stripe palette on this rebozo is one of those personal statements — a combination the owner of this shop describes as among the most spectacular she has encountered in years of sourcing directly from the community. The weaving takes about a month. The fringe — hand-tied silk clusters the Purepecha call rapacejo, or "flowers" — takes additional hours. Real feathers are woven in as a finishing signature. No two are identical.
The story
The rebozo is one of Mexico's oldest and most cherished textile traditions, woven by Purepecha (P'urhépecha) artisans in Michoacán on the backstrap loom since before the Spanish arrived. The telar de cintura ties around the weaver's waist — her own body provides the tension that shapes the cloth. This produces a fabric with a character that no industrial loom can replicate. This particular style, with its bold stripes and elaborate fringe, has been part of the Purepecha weaving tradition for many generations.

Styling
With a plain black dress, the stripes become the focal point of the entire outfit. Worn over the shoulders at a late-summer dinner, it functions as both wrap and statement piece. The 30-inch width is generous enough to fold twice as a thick scarf for cooler weather without losing any of its visual impact.
Care
Spot clean only — steam and static guard are both safe to use. Avoid machine washing, dry cleaning, or wringing the fringe to preserve the silk "flowers."
Frequently asked questions
What does a Purepecha rebozo feel like to wear?
The cotton and rayon blend gives it a soft, medium weight — substantial enough to feel like a real wrap but not heavy. The fringe at the ends moves beautifully with the body.
Are the colors colorfast?
Yes. The yarns are dyed before weaving, and the colors are stable. Spot-cleaning with cold water and mild soap is all that is needed to maintain them.
What are the silk flowers in the fringe?
The rapacejo is the hand-tied fringe at each end of the rebozo. Each "flower" is an individual silk knot tied by the weaver's hands — not a machine-made tassel.
