One artisan. One backstrap loom. One full month of weaving — and a color sense that her community considers something close to extraordinary.
Simply fantastic — these words come up again and again when people encounter this Purepecha rebozo for the first time. It comes from a Purepecha artisan in Michoacán known for her color combinations: bold, deliberate, and entirely her own. The black ground makes every other color pop with an intensity that lighter-ground rebozos cannot match. At each end, she knots silk fringe into the elaborate tassels the Purepecha call rapacejo — "flowers" — and works real feathers among them as her personal signature.
The story
The Purepecha (P'urhépecha) of Michoacán weave on the telar de cintura — the backstrap loom, tied around the weaver's waist — a technique unchanged for centuries. The rebozo Alhuiran style woven here has been produced in this community for generations, passed from weaver to weaver. This artisan's color sensibility is what sets her work apart: a black foundation that makes the secondary colors sing.

Styling
The black ground makes this rebozo remarkably versatile — it layers over everything without fighting it. Draped over a solid-color dress, the multicolor stripe composition becomes the focal point. As a wrap on a cool evening, it carries the weight and warmth of something substantial. This is the rebozo that photographs beautifully and wears even better.
Care
Spot clean only — steam and static guard are both safe to use.
Frequently asked questions
What makes the black ground rebozo different from other colorways?
The black foundation makes every stripe color read at full intensity — the same hues on a lighter ground would appear softer. The contrast is deliberate and striking.
Is this handwoven or machine-made?
Entirely handwoven on a backstrap loom by a Purepecha artisan in Michoacán. No machine equivalent exists for this technique.
How long does one rebozo take to weave?
Approximately one month of sustained weaving, not counting the additional time for knotting the silk fringe flowers and placing the feathers.
What is the fringe made of?
The fringe is hand-knotted silk — tied into the "flower" shapes the Purepecha call rapacejo. Real feathers are worked among the fringe as the artisan's signature.
