Blue is not a color this artisan reaches for — it is one she builds, stripe by deliberate stripe.
This blue Purepecha rebozo from Michoacán is one of the most spectacular pieces the owner of this shop has ever sourced from this particular artisan. The blue tones are composed with the kind of intentionality that distinguishes a master weaver from a craftsperson — layered, breathing, alive in different light. The rebozo is 100% cotton with rayon, woven on the ancient telar de cintura, the backstrap loom, a process that takes approximately one month per piece. At each end, hundreds of silk threads are hand-tied into the intricate fringe the Purepecha call rapacejo — "flowers" — and real feathers are woven in as the artisan's signature.
The story
The Purepecha (P'urhépecha) of Michoacán have woven rebozos on the backstrap loom for centuries. The telar de cintura is tied to the weaver's waist; her body provides the tension that shapes every thread of every stripe. The feather detail in this artisan's work is her personal mark — a tradition within a tradition, woven into every piece she completes.
