Thirty days on the backstrap loom. Hundreds of knots in the fringe. Real feathers, worked in by hand. This is what a month of weaving looks like.

One of the most beautiful Purepecha rebozos with fringe from Michoacán, Mexico — the combination of color and craft is simply spectacular. These come from a Purepecha artisan in Michoacán known for her remarkable color sense. This is a traditional style of rebozo that has been produced for many years: 100% cotton with rayon, with silk fringe and feathers, woven entirely on a backstrap loom. The fringe on each end is what the Purepecha call rapacejo — "flowers." This artisan is known throughout her community for her color combinations.

The story

The Purepecha (P'urhépecha) of Michoacán weave on the telar de cintura — the backstrap loom — a technique that has not changed in centuries because it does not need to. The loom is tied around the weaver's waist; the tension of her own body controls every thread. The rebozo Alhuiran style has been produced in this community for generations. There is no shortcut, no machine equivalent, no factory version of this piece.

Materials & craftsmanship

  • Fabric: 100% cotton woven with rayon
  • Fringe: Hand-tied silk "flowers" (rapacejo)
  • Accents: Natural feathers woven into the fringe
  • Technique: Backstrap loom (telar de cintura)
  • Origin: Michoacán, Mexico — Purepecha (P'urhépecha) community
  • Time to weave: Approximately one month per piece

Dimensions

  • Length: 76.0 inches (193.0 cm)
  • Width: 30.0 inches (76.2 cm)

Styling

At 76 inches long and 30 inches wide, this rebozo has the full dimensions for a true wrap — over both shoulders, around the body, or folded lengthwise as a scarf with the feathered fringe visible at each end. The colors are bold enough to carry a neutral outfit on their own.

Care

Spot clean only — steam and static guard are both safe to use. Avoid machine washing, dry cleaning, or wringing the fringe to preserve the silk "flowers."

Frequently asked questions

How is the fringe made?
The rapacejo fringe is hand-knotted, silk thread by silk thread, into the "flower" structures at each end of the rebozo. The feathers are then woven among them by hand. This finishing process adds significant time to an already month-long weaving process.

Is this the same artisan across all the rebozos in the store?
All of these Purepecha rebozos come from the same Michoacán weaving community. The artisan is known specifically for her color combinations.

What is the weight of this rebozo?
The cotton-rayon construction gives it a medium weight — substantial enough to feel like an heirloom, light enough to travel and layer with.

Is this appropriate as a gift?
It is one of the most meaningful textile gifts available — a wearable piece of Purepecha cultural heritage that takes a full month to make.
