They don't hand-solder paired doves like this anymore — at least, not at this scale.

These earrings come from a Mazahua silversmith whose community in the State of Mexico has been producing dove motifs for bridal ceremonies for generations. The palomas — facing each other, wings folded, cradling a natural amethyst — are not decorative whimsy. In Mazahua tradition, the paired dove is a symbol of love and union, which is why this silhouette has been the traditional bridal earring of central Mexico for as long as anyone can remember. The amethyst at the center catches light the way a gemstone should: quietly, and from a distance.

About this piece

Mazahua silverwork from the State of Mexico is one of the least-discussed and most undervalued traditions in Mexican silver. Unlike the more famous plateros of Taxco, Mazahua silversmiths work within an Indigenous community context where the designs carry specific ceremonial meaning. The paired doves represent love and lifelong union. Each earring is hand-soldered from a family pattern — never cast, never mass-produced. No two pairs are exactly the same.

  • Width: 2.0 inches (5.1 cm)
  • Weight: 28 g / 0.99 oz

Styling

With a white dress and the right occasion, these earrings need nothing else around them. They are dramatic enough to carry a simple outfit and refined enough not to compete with a more elaborate one. The deep violet of the amethyst works particularly well against warm skin tones and jewel-toned fabrics.

Care

Polish gently with a soft silver cloth. Store in an airtight anti-tarnish pouch when not in use. Avoid exposure to perfume, lotion, chlorine, and water. Keep amethyst away from prolonged direct sunlight, which can gradually fade the stone's color.

Frequently asked questions

What do the doves symbolize in Mazahua tradition?
In Mazahua silversmithing, paired doves (palomas) represent love, union, and devotion. They are the traditional bridal earring of the Mazahua Indigenous community of the State of Mexico, worn to wedding ceremonies for generations.

Is this real silver?
Yes. These are crafted in pure Mexican silver by a Mazahua artisan — hand-soldered, not silver-plated or cast. The weight (28 g for the pair) reflects genuine silver content.

Is the amethyst natural?
Yes. The stone is natural amethyst, not synthetic or glass.

Are these suitable as wedding earrings?
They are the traditional Mazahua wedding earring. They are substantial enough to photograph beautifully and light enough on the ear for a full day's wear.
