One backstrap loom. One month. One artisan whose color combinations have made her a name in Michoacán.

This rebozo is the purest expression of the Purepecha weaving tradition: 100% cotton with rayon, woven thread by thread on a telar de cintura in Michoacán, finished at each end with elaborate hand-tied silk fringe — the knots the Purepecha call rapacejo, or "flowers." There are no feathers in this particular piece, which gives the fringe itself — and the artisan's color composition in the body — the full spotlight. The artisan's color sense is the thing that makes her sought-after within her community, and it shows here.

The story

The rebozo is among Mexico's most enduring textile traditions, carried forward by Purepecha (P'urhépecha) artisans who have worked on the backstrap loom since long before Spanish was spoken in the region. The telar de cintura is anchored to the weaver's own waist — she shapes every thread with her body's tension. This is not metaphor. It is the literal mechanism of the loom. The result is a textile that carries the physical signature of the person who made it, impossible to reproduce industrially.

Materials & craftsmanship

  • Fabric: 100% cotton woven with rayon
  • Fringe: Hand-tied silk "flowers" (rapacejo)
  • Technique: Backstrap loom (telar de cintura)
  • Origin: Michoacán, Mexico — Purepecha (P'urhépecha) community
  • Time to weave: Approximately one month per piece

Dimensions

  • Length: 76.0 inches (193.0 cm)
  • Width: 30.0 inches (76.2 cm)

Styling

Without feathers, the fringe moves with more fluidity — a clean cascade of silk flowers at each end. This makes the piece particularly versatile: elegant enough for a formal evening, relaxed enough for a Sunday morning at a café. Drape it loosely over both shoulders with a simple slip dress, or fold it over one shoulder as a statement wrap with trousers and a silk blouse.

Care

Spot clean only — steam and static guard are both safe to use. Avoid machine washing, dry cleaning, or wringing the fringe to preserve the silk "flowers."

Frequently asked questions

Is this different from the rebozos with feathers?
Yes — this rebozo has hand-tied silk fringe (rapacejo) but no feathers woven into the fringe. It is still handwoven on a backstrap loom by the same artisan tradition; the absence of feathers gives the silk fringe its own uninterrupted presence.

How is the fringe made?
Each silk "flower" in the rapacejo is tied by hand at the end of the warp threads after the body of the rebozo is complete. It is time-consuming, painstaking work — the fringe can take as long as the weaving itself.

What is the quality of the cotton?
The body is 100% cotton woven with rayon for added drape and subtle sheen. The feel is soft and substantial without being heavy.

Can this rebozo be given as a gift?
It is one of the most meaningful textile gifts from Mexico — a piece that took a month to make, by an artisan whose skill is recognized in her community, in a tradition that stretches back centuries. Yes.
